Quick question, have you ever picked up a book because of its cover, and it completely misled you? Not that the story was shitty or anything, it was just not what you expected at all. That’s exactly how I found one of my favorite books.
I grew up in a house where books were a big deal. My parents were academics, so reading wasn’t optional, it was part of our daily lives. There were always books around, always something yet to read, always an expectation that you should spend your free time reading. When it came to buying books, my dad handled it. School books mostly, and then the occasional “fun” books, but still very controlled. Nothing too wild. Once we became teenagers, my sisters and I started buying books ourselves, and somehow, without even planning it, we all ended up in the same place: romance. We’d buy them together, swap them, gist about them, pass them around like currency. If one person bought a good one, everybody read it. That was the system.
So on this particular day, sometime in secondary school, I walked into a small bookshop close to my house with a clear plan: buy a romance novel and leave. Simple. But then I saw it. A book sitting there with the word “Kiss” boldly on the cover. At first glance, it felt familiar, like something in my lane, but something about it was off. The cover didn’t feel soft or pretty or emotional like the romance books I was used to. It was darker, tense, and clearly hiding something. I remember thinking, ” This doesn’t look like love. But I couldn’t stop looking at it. That’s how I picked up Kiss the Girls. No recommendation, no idea what it was about, just pure curiosity and a slightly confusing cover.
That one decision changed everything. The book was not romance, not even close. It was intense, dark, fast-paced, the kind of story that keeps you turning pages because you need to know what happens next. I was hooked. And because I couldn’t keep something that good to myself, I did what we always did. I shared it. It moved from me to my sisters, from my sisters to my cousins, and from there to basically everyone we used to exchange romance books with. And the funny part was, they all loved it too. People who were deep in romance like me suddenly got pulled into something completely different, all because of one book, one cover.
Till today, I don’t even know where that particular copy is. It passed through too many hands. A random person probably has it now. But that’s how you know a book made an impact.
Now if you’re an author, I want you to think about this carefully. I did not know the author. I did not read the blurb. I was not looking for that genre. The cover did all the work. It caught my attention, created curiosity, and made me pause long enough to make a completely different choice. And that one moment didn’t just give you one reader, it created multiple readers, because I shared it.
So ask yourself, if your book was sitting on that same shelf, would I have picked it up? Would I have paused? Would I have been curious enough to choose it over what I originally came for? Or would I have walked past it without even noticing? Because the truth is, before anyone reads your story, they see it. And sometimes that one moment of “this looks interesting” is the difference between being ignored and being passed around from one reader to another.
If you’re putting your work out there, your cover shouldn’t just exist. It should pull people in. The kind that makes someone stop, stare, and think, “wait… what is this about?” The kind that can take someone out of what they came for and lead them somewhere completely different. Because sometimes, that’s all it takes.
